An Autoradiogram of Skeletal Muscle from a Pig Raised on a Farm within 20 km of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant OAK
YAMAGUCHI, Toshiro; SAWANO, Kaita; FURUHAMA, Kazuhisa; MORI, Chizuo; YAMADA, Kazutaka; 山田, 一孝.
We utilized autoradiography to visualize radioactive contamination in the skeletal muscles of a pig raised within 20 km of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant following the nuclear accident. The autoradiogram of control muscle showed relatively homogenous exposure. In contrast, the autoradiogram of affected muscle showed a heterogeneous and sporadically dense imaging pattern. Photo luminescence densities of the affected and control muscles were 3.89 ± 0.67 and 2.13 ± 0.43 PSL/mm2, respectively. This difference indicated that radioactive cesium was distributed in the skeletal muscle of the affected pig.

Autoradiography as a tool in primary production research OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..

Complementarity of radioautographic and immunohistochemical techniques for localizing neuroreceptors at the light and electron microscopy level BJMBR
Beaudet,A..
To assess relationships between neuropeptide-binding sites and receptor proteins in rat brain, the distribution of radioautographically labeled somatostatin and neurotensin-binding sites was compared to that of immunolabeled sst2A and NTRH receptor subtypes, respectively. By light microscopy, immunoreactive sst2A receptors were either confined to neuronal perikarya and dendrites or diffusely distributed in tissue. By electron microscopy, areas expressing somatodendritic sst2A receptors displayed only low proportions of membrane-associated, as compared to intracellular, receptors. Conversely, regions displaying diffuse sst2A labeling exhibited higher proportions of membrane-associated than intracellular receptors. Furthermore, the former showed only low...

Development, comparative morphology and cornification of reptilian claws in relation to claws evolution in tetrapods Naturalis
Alibardi, L..
The development of claws in different reptiles and their cornification are analyzed using histological, ultrastructural and autoradiographic methods. Claws develop at the tip of digits in relation to the growth of the terminal phalanx and appear as modified scales. The apical epidermis of digit becomes thickened and is associated with a mesenchymal condensation or a dense mesenchyme. The dorsal side of the digit becomes the unguis while the ventral side becomes the sub-unguis. The corneous layer in the unguis is thicker than in the sub-unguis and accumulates hard-keratin while corneocytes remain separated or partially fused. Bundles of hard-keratin tend to accumulate in parallel orientation with respect to the surface and are directed toward the claw tip....

Effects on prolactin secretion and binding to dopaminergic receptors in sleep-deprived lupus-prone mice BJMBR
Palma,B.D.; Hipolide,D.C.; Tufik,S..
Sleep disturbances have far-reaching effects on the neuroendocrine and immune systems and may be linked to disease manifestation. Sleep deprivation can accelerate the onset of lupus in NZB/NZWF1 mice, an animal model of severe systemic lupus erythematosus. High prolactin (PRL) concentrations are involved in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus in human beings, as well as in NZB/NZWF1 mice. We hypothesized that PRL could be involved in the earlier onset of the disease in sleep-deprived NZB/NZWF1 mice. We also investigated its binding to dopaminergic receptors, since PRL secretion is mainly controlled by dopamine. Female NZB/NZWF1 mice aged 9 weeks were deprived of sleep using the multiple platform method. Blood samples were taken for the...

Maintenance of the corneal epithelium is carried out by germinative cells of its basal stratum and not by presumed stem cells of the limbus BJMBR
Haddad,A.; Faria-e-Sousa,S.J..
The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the proliferative behavior of rabbit corneal epithelium and establish if any particular region was preferentially involved in epithelial maintenance. [3H]-thymidine was injected intravitreally into both normal eyes and eyes with partially scraped corneal epithelium. Semithin sections of the anterior segment were evaluated by quantitative autoradiography. Segments with active replication (on) and those with no cell division (off) were intermingled in all regions of the tissue, suggesting that the renewal of the epithelial surface of the cornea followed an on/off alternating pattern. In the limbus, heavy labeling of the outermost layers was observed, coupled with a few or no labeled nuclei in the basal...

Migration of Schistosoma mansoni sambon (Trematoda, Schistosomatidae) from skin to lungs in immunized NZ rabbits (Lagomorpha, Leporidae) by autoradiographic analysis Zoologia
Pinto,R. Magalhães; Noronha,Dely; Almeida,Marília S. S; Katz,Naftale; Tendler,Miriam.
Skin to lung migration of Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907 - (75 Se) - selenomethionine-labeled cercariae was tracked by tissue autoradiography on days 1, 4, 6, 8 after challenge, in rabbits immunized with a S. mansoni derived saline extract. Either in vaccinated animals or in those of the control unprimed group, the peak of skin schistosomula occurs 24hs after infection. Comparison between peaks of lungs migrating larvae showed that, in control animals, the increase of worm burden in this site, is detected on the 6th day post-infection, differing from immunized rabbits, in which this peak occurs on day 4, when skin and lungs counts are still equivalent, decreasing gradually, showing a different pattern of the S. mansoni migration and suggesting that main...

Mitochondrial DNA synthesis studied autoradiographically in various cell types in vivo BJMBR
Korr,H.; Kurz,C.; Seidler,T.O.; Sommer,D.; Schmitz,C..
It is generally accepted that mitochondria are able to proliferate even in postmitotic cells due to their natural turnover and also to satisfy increased cell energy requirements. However, no detailed studies are available, particularly with respect to specific cell types. Since [3H]-thymidine is incorporated not only into nuclear (n) DNA but also into the DNA of cytoplasmic mitochondria, an autoradiographic approach was developed at the light microscopy level in order to study basic questions of mitochondrial (mt) proliferation in organs of rodents in situ via the cytoplasmic incorporation of [3H]-thymidine injected into the animals 1 h before sacrifice. Experiments carried out on mice after X-irradiation showed that cytoplasmic labeling was not due to a...

Receptor localization of steroid hormones and drugs: discoveries through the use of thaw-mount and dry-mount autoradiography BJMBR
Stumpf,W.E..
The history of receptor autoradiography, its development and applications, testify to the utility of this histochemical technique for localizing radiolabeled hormones and drugs at cellular and subcellular sites of action in intact tissues. Localization of diffusible compounds has been a challenge that was met through the introduction of the "thaw-mount" and "dry-mount" autoradiographic techniques thirty years ago. With this cellular receptor autoradiography, used alone or combined with other histochemical techniques, sites of specific binding and deposition in vivo and in vitro have been characterized. Numerous discoveries, some reviewed in this article, provided information that led to new concepts and opened new areas of research. As an example, in...
